By a Gray Sea (2004)

for violin and marimba
arranged for viola and piano, 2006

Written for marimbist Kunihiko Komori. Premiered with violinist Yonah Zur at NYU, November 2, 2004. 8’.

Viola/piano version premiered by Amy Leonard and Matthew Quayle at Gregory Singer Fine Violins, New York, March 2007.

The title refers to impressions I had on dreary, overcast days along the Maine coast. The music is pervaded by a swelling gesture which rises and falls back into nothing, like an ocean wave.
